Report from Genbukan World Taikai in Japan 2026

The Genbukan World Taikai in Japan 2026 was held in Narita, Japan, from September 5th to 9th. Approximately 150 members from around the world gathered to train together under the guidance of Tanemura Soke and senior Genbukan instructors.
This year’s Taikai focused especially on Mugen Shinto Ryu Iai-Jutsu and Aizuhan Denkei Onoha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu. Members had the opportunity to receive detailed instruction in both Ryuha directly in Japan. Particularly significant was the first public presentation of Aizuhan Denkei Onoha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu, making this Taikai a truly special occasion.

Members preparing for examinations were able to train with their partners and refine their techniques under the guidance of Soke and Kotaro Hanshi.
The demonstrations by Soke and Kotaro Hanshi were truly impressive. Their speed, precision, control, and powerful fighting spirit gave everyone a rare glimpse of the martial spirit of warriors of old. Through their demonstrations, the technical excellence of the Ryuha and the spirit behind the techniques could be clearly felt.

The examinations were an important part of the Taikai, with tests held in Mugen Shinto Ryu Iai-Jutsu and Aizuhan Denkei Onoha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu.
Also, we are pleased to announce the following new mastership ranks:
Kyoshi: Neven Kopčalić, Yousouf Mamode Ally, Jose-Louis Bravo Ortega, Paul Van Ammel.
Renshi: Davis Owen, Aleksandra Janković, Ireneu Rodrigouez Angrill, David Gimeno Marti.

Congratulations to all members who successfully passed their examinations. These achievements reflect many years of dedicated training and commitment to the martial arts.
Another important part of the Taikai was a special Amatsu Tatara lecture by Soke, titled “Life’s Purpose and Mission.” The lecture gave participants an opportunity to reflect on the deeper meaning of the teachings and the relationship between martial arts and life.
It was also remarkable that, despite approximately 150 members practicing extensively with Iaito and Bokken, no injuries occurred throughout the Taikai. This was made possible through the concentration, discipline, mutual awareness, and cooperation of all participants.

The final evening was celebrated with a traditional banquet, where everyone gathered to celebrate Tanemura Soke’s 79th birthday. The evening continued with performances introducing traditional Japanese culture, including the Furisode-san and the traditional art of Daikagura by “Nijūmaru,” featuring shishimai and various acrobatic performances.

The following day, participants enjoyed a cultural sightseeing program, visiting the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, followed by a sunset cruise on Tokyo Bay and a buffet aboard the boat.
The Genbukan World Taikai 2026 was much more than a gathering for training and examinations. It was a memorable meeting of members from around the world, united by the study of traditional martial arts, friendship, respect, and the spirit of the Genbukan.
We sincerely congratulate all members who participated and especially those who achieved new ranks. We extend our deepest gratitude to Tanemura Soke, Kotaro Hanshi, the senior instructors, Honbu Dojo staff, and all members whose dedication and cooperation made this Taikai so special.

We wish Tanemura Soke a very happy 79th birthday, continued health and strength, and many more years of teaching and transmitting the traditional martial arts.
We look forward to seeing everyone again at Japan Taikai 2027!
